Block leader
SS men who controlled prisoner blocks were called "block leaders" (Blockführer). The block leaders held the life and death of the inmates in their hands. The SS used so-called prisoner functionaries (block elders and barracks-room elders) to maintain "order" in terms of the SS camp regulations in the prisoners' quarters (blocks, barracks).
